New Orleans Internship Program: Home Building and Wetlands Restoration

in partnership with Common Ground Relief

Each winter, SHARE Interns have the opportunity to visit Common Ground Relief in New Orleans to participate in post-Katrina home rebuilding and wetlands restoration. Participants work hard during the day to build homes for displaced families and restore and replant the wetlands to help prevent future flooding. The evenings are left open so that the volunteers can explore New Orleans and immerse themselves in the city's rich culture.

This trip provides the opportunity for interns to work as a team to bring aid to a community that has been devastated by natural disaster. It also gives them unique memories and first hand experience working on a development project.

"Common Ground Relief's mission is to create resilient Gulf Coast communities that are environmentally sustainable, financially viable and personally cohesive. [They] fulfill this mission by helping residents build assets that support community transformation and renewal. "

For more information about the experiences of previous participants of this program, please see the New Orleans Internship Projects Page and our partner's website at If you would like to participate in this program, please fill out the application by clicking the link below.

Participation in SHARE's New Orleans Internship Opportunity:

If you are interested in participating in the New Orleans Internship, here are a few things that you should know:

  1. All Interns are responsible for paying for their own travel expenses, including, but not limited to, airfare, local transportation in departure and arrival cities, phone calls, food, unexpected travelling costs, etc.
  2. A minimum donation of $150.00-200.00 dollars to Common Ground Relief is necessary, and is the responsibility of the intern. This donation covers housing and meals eaten with the organization during the trip.
  3. SHARE charges a $100.00 administration fee to make all travel arrangements and for arranging the internship details with Common Ground Relief.
  4. All travelers must be considered medically healthy and fit for travel by a doctor prior to departure.

If arrangements are made during the off season for various locations the travel expenses can often be very reasonable. The SHARE staff is very knowledgeable about travel costs, arrangements, and good times to travel to various locations. Our staff works hard to ensure an optimal experience during your internship, at a price point that most find very reasonable. This program has been a wonderful success in the past and we have heard nothing but great things about the experiences of our previous participants.
